Wonders & Blunders: Miche Bag & Empire Waists

Wardrobe Wonder: the Miche BagIt’s been a couple of months now, and I still absolutely adore my Miche bag. This is a a seriously versatile accessory, and I hope that more bag styles are developed for what I now consider a wardrobe staple (this style is perfectly fine, I'd just like to see more choices).

Miche Bags, for those who haven’t heard of them, are the bags with the changeable outer shell (“Chelles”, officially). You buy a base bag in black or brown (or both), and get two sets of handles, one short and one shoulder-length. Then you go nuts picking out bunches of different shells to fit around the outside of the bag, enabling you to completely change the look in about 2 seconds before you walk out your front door.I have eight of Miche’s official shells, and a few handmade shell covers from a seller on Etsy. I haven’t used the shell covers yet, but I switch the Miche shells nearly every day, depending on what I’m wearing. I was never one to switch handbags like so many women do – I was too lazy, and always just carried the same bag, day and night. Now I still do, but the outside changes to compliment my outfit, making me feel more “pulled together”.The Miche is a smaller bag – there’s not much room inside, but it’s enough (and your husband/kids will just have to carry their own junk around). Here’s what’s in my bag – you can see it all fits, but there isn’t much room to spare:I don’t carry my big checkbook wallet anymore – I just put a couple checks in my little blue wallet you see there, and that way, there’s room for my crocheted tissue paper holder. Other than that there’s my PDA, a small makeup case that holds a pill container, several mints, a nail file, and a pocket mirror. Two bags for shopping, and then I have the pockets on one side filled with gum, pens, and lip balm. There’s a zipper pocket on the other side that doesn’t open very far, I keep my purse hook, my work ID card, and a few business cards in that pocket. And that’s it!

If you need room for a makeup bag, you could get some tiny flatter tissue packs (I found some at the dollar store), that would fit in there and still allow another makeup bag. I’ve never been one to carry makeup with me (always forget to “touch up” anyways), so I have no need for that.

Miche has new shells coming out all the time – I really want the new black and white shell, and they have a set of handles with chains on them now as well (which might be cool). You can buy Miche Bags straight from the company at www.michebag.com, or from 4miche.com (which is where I bought mine – long shipping time!). They’re also available from QVC for a better price, and on Amazon.com. Or you can find yourself a distributor, as they often have better deals.

Wardrobe Blunder: Empire Waist TopsUg! I bought these thinking I’d wear a cami underneath, and look so stylish and young. Uh, no. Seriously, to pull off an empire waist, one has to have a flat stomach. Otherwise, one (me) ends up looking pregnant. Not good! They’re cute tops, but a serious blunder in my closet…so they’re off to the donation box today.

Weekly Party Theme: Fire & Ice

Our weather has been so up and down lately that it seems appropriate to for the party theme this week to be both hot and cold. I haven’t held a Fire & Ice party yet, but if I ever do, these are the ideas I’ve come up with.

Invitations: Die-cut cardstock into long, skinny “peaks” on the front so that water on the back piece “drips” into icicles over the front of the card. Open it up to reveal flames on the alternate side of the icicles, “melting” the ice into drips at the top of the card.

Décor: Must-haves for this party are ice candle holders, created by freezing distilled water in layers (use any shaped container), and embedding items (flowers, toys, etc) into the layers as you go. In the final layer, freeze tea-lights (or just the cups), so that you’ll have flickering fire inside of large ice cubes for ambiance. Remember to burn these outside, or over a sturdy drip tray in the house to catch the water as it melts. Lots of candles for fire (soy or beeswax, rather than paraffin), and clear glass blocks make great ice cubes (fill with Christmas lights for a little extra “pop”).

Serving pieces: Take two bowls, one larger than the other, and fill the larger bowl about half way with distilled water. Put the smaller bowl in, and secure the tops of the bowls level to each other with duct tape. Freeze solid, then let sit on the counter until you can “unmold” the ice bowl. Return to the freezer until needed. You can embed items into the ice, just be sure to use distilled water, since it will freeze completely clear (tap water will freeze cloudy due to the mineral content).

Menu: I’ve always thought an ice cream sundae bar would go well with this theme – cold ice cream, and warm toppings like hot fudge & caramel. You could even heat up your favorite jam as a topping. I’d line ice bowls with clear bowls, then fill them with ice cream scoops. Use fondue pots or tea warmers (with real flame candles) to keep the toppings warm, and continue the “fire” theme.

Drinks: Chocolate and peppermint pair well with fire & ice – a hot chocolate bar with Hot Damn, Peppermint Schnapps, and peppermint sticks for those who don’t imbibe would be perfect as a compliment to the sundae bar. You can also buy molds to make ice shot glasses – great for shots of spicy liquors.

Dress code: Overcoats and shorts? Parkas and sandals? Snow pants and tanks? Have guests dress for hot and cold weather, just for fun!

Whoa – What Happened Here?

Anyone still hanging around my little blog here may notice some rather dramatic changes today. Like the fact that I’ve obliterated my past posts. Or maybe you noticed that shiny new list of Daily Topics to the right. Oh. My. God. Does this mean she’s actually going to post daily again? Whoa. Weird. And yes, that is what that means. I’m starting all over, and hopefully you’ll come along for the ride!

So, here’s a quick run-down of the new topics:

Monday: Weekly Party Theme
- Every Monday, I’ll post a new party theme idea, with some suggestions for decorations, food, and whatever else I can think of. I’m good at party planning, why not share the wealth?

Tuesday: Wardrobe W&B
- Every Tuesday, I’ll post wardrobe wonders and blunders, either from my own closet, or “as seen elsewhere”. Because I find things like this interesting and amusing.

Wednesday: What is that?
- A new photo every Wednesday which will hopefully have readers guessing, “What is that?”

Thursday: Variety Network News
- A condensed version of posts from my other “niche” blogs for the week.

Friday: Write Around
- In the tradition of “choose your own” stories, a new chapter of an ongoing serial for which readers can choose a new direction weekly by voting.

Come back this afternoon for the first Weekly Party Theme, and stick around all week to check out the new format!
